A child who lives in a home with neglect, abuse, or assault quickly learns that the world is not a safe place. A baby who has lived through a natural disaster, homelessness, or other traumatic events comes to understand that their needs will not always be met. The toddler may hoard food or refuse to remove their jacket or backpack for fear that it will be taken away from them. The good news is that how you interact with the children in your care can lessen the negative impact of past and ongoing trauma.

Trauma-informed care is a necessary part of providing the best care possible. This term is often used to mean any number of things. For this course, trauma-informed care is a system that recognizes and responds to the impact of trauma and related stress. In order to do this, you need to understand trauma and its impacts on development, document what you see, and create safe spaces for the children in your care to heal and grow. This course will give you a foundation to do just that.
